Loops

>Modern music making often starts with a loop. A loop is a sample or a series of sounds in a sequence that when played repeatedly sounds in time, smooth and continuous.
Here is an example of a drum beat sample which does not correctly loop. It sounds out of time because the loop has been trimmed too short.

Here is another example of the same drum beat sample which does not correctly loop. It sounds out of time because the loop has been trimmed too long and there is a gap before the loop begins again.

This is the same drum loop correctly trimmed. You can help yourself check that it sounds in time by counting the beats out loud, tapping the table or jumping up and down in time waving your hands in the air!

It's not always as easy to spot a loop that is not trimmed properly but practicing with lots of different types of samples and music helps a lot. Always remember to keep a copy of your original sample so you can return to it and trim it again if necesary.
